Gris is the French word for grey.
That is the whole explanation. And also not the explanation at all.
Grey is the colour that painters spend careers trying to mix correctly. It is not the absence of colour — it is every colour held in suspension, none of them winning. The grey of morning fog before the sun decides what kind of day it will be. The grey of undyed wool straight from the loom. The grey of old stone walls in cities that have survived everything. The grey of restraint practised so long it becomes a kind of confidence.
We named this shirt-dress after its colour because the colour is the shirt-dress. There is no embroidery to look at. No print to discuss. No contrasting panel drawing the eye. There is only this cloth, in this grey, falling in this particular way — and the three pin-tucks pressed into the chest that tell you, quietly, that someone understood exactly what they were making.
Gris. The colour that contains all the others. The shirt-dress that needs none of them.
Gris is a hand-woven 100% cotton shirt-dress in dove grey — a long-length piece falling mid-calf, with a classic point collar, a structured chest panel with three fine pin-tucks on the left side, a horizontal waist seam releasing into an A-line skirt, a full-length button placket with tone-on-tone grey buttons, full sleeves with wide structured cuffs, two deep patch pockets at the hip, a contrast hem band at the foot of the skirt, and a centre box pleat at the back yoke.
The pockets are not incidental. They are architecturally placed at the hip, large enough to take a hand entirely inside, and they sit flush against the A-line skirt without pulling or disrupting the drape. When the hand slides into a Gris pocket, the silhouette doesn't change. This required thought. It required a tailor who understood that a pocket is part of the geometry, not an addition to it.
The buttons are grey. Exactly grey. Not charcoal, not smoke — the same grey as the cloth, so the placket disappears and what you see is not a row of buttons but an unbroken vertical line from collar to hem.
Wear it with white cotton trousers for every kind of day. With wide-leg linen for a long evening. With nothing under it but slip and confidence. Gris works at a board meeting and at a quiet dawat and on the morning you need to feel collected before you've had your chai, and it will not behave differently in any of them.
I was made with 100% fine cotton, making me a breathable fabric.
I was woven by "Plain weave" technique - a rare process that's almost extinct in Pakistan.
It took my weaver 5 hours to weave entire Shirt Fabric.
